Vietnam extends Noi Bai Airport closure over super typhoon Yagi concerns

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has extended the closure of Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi by two hours on Saturday night due to concerns over heavy rains caused by super typhoon Yagi.

According to the latest decision, the airport will now close temporarily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., instead of the previously scheduled closure at 7 p.m.

The authority has advised domestic airlines to replenish fuel supplies for flights operating between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 2 a.m. on Sunday, in case these flights need to wait or divert to alternate airports.

If the typhoon dissipates early after making landfall in the northern region, the authority will adjust the airport’s operating hours accordingly.

Van Don, Cat Bi, and Tho Xuan airports in the northern region will also suspend services during specific periods on Saturday due to the expected impacts of the typhoon.

Meanwhile, rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to affect operations at Vinh, Dien Bien, and Dong Hoi airports. Approximately 240 domestic flights and 70 international flights will be canceled.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the eye of the storm was located approximately 415km east of Quang Ninh at 4 p.m. on Friday, with maximum sustained winds of 201 kph.

The typhoon is expected to pass China’s Hainan Island and enter the Gulf of Tonkin on Friday night.

By 1 a.m. on Saturday, the typhoon will be about 230 km from Quang Ninh, with maximum wind speeds of 166 kph. By Saturday afternoon, the typhoon's center is expected to make landfall in the provinces of Quang Ninh and Nam Dinh, with wind speeds ranging from 103-118 kph.

The typhoon will then continue west-northwest at a speed of 15-20 kph, moving deeper into the provinces of Lang Son, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Ha Nam, and Ninh Binh.
